IWD - 2019

On 8th March, we're celebrating International Women’s Day! Did you know it began in 1911?
The day was created to celebrate the achievements of women across the world and to highlight the continued need to fight for equality.

Our local suffragists Florence Lockwood and Helen Studdard were part of the international movement to fight for the voting rights of women. They travelled to Europe on a number of occasions to represent the Huddersfield Suffrage Society (part of the National Union of Women’s Suffrage Societies) at the conferences of the International Woman Suffrage Alliance.

The Alliance was formally created in 1904 and became the lead organisation for international women’s suffrage. Members gathered from countries across the world and it’s believed Helen attended conferences in Copenhagen, Amsterdam, Stockholm and Budapest between 1906 and 1913.
The organisation is now known as the International Alliance of Women and continues to promote women’s human rights, equality and the empowerment of women.
